I heard part of an interview with someone fom the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) regarding a new law that the US Senate passed two days ago. It basically said that the US FBI will (or can) look into online violations of the laws of other countries by persons/citizens in the US. So I could, for example, be apprehended for conspiring to insult the ruling despot of ________, even though it is not a violation of the laws of my country or state. This could obviously get totally abused as a mental and political weapon. Anyone have more details? The EFF site didn't appear to have headlines for it yet, but it sounds like one hell of a trojan horse.

Re: New laws...
Wed, August 9, 2006 - 12:07 PMThat can't be right.
we can't even get the Senate to agree to have american's be subject to the world court.

Re: New laws...
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 6:49 AMThis proposed law would never pass Constitutional muster. By its intent it compromises protections over political speech, which is protected by the First Amendment. There are also hints of extraterritoriality here and that is not permitted by Federal law and legal precedent.
One benefit to the U.S. NOT belonging to certain world judicial organizations is that we are protected from the odious and repressive laws of other countries. A law like this would permit restrictions that we've fought against since 1776.

Re: New laws...
Thu, August 17, 2006 - 10:41 AMI have a couple more details... if this has become a law, it is another way to toss people that are "in the way" into jail. Not that they really need laws.
Oh yeah, the other detail, check out eharassment.ca. I doubt the EFF will do very much advertising for them. Thanks for the post.

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 4:15 PMUh, does ANYone think THIS administration pays much attention to "passing constitutional muster"???? If it passes, and even if it doesn't, I think this administration will do exactly as they please in MANY instances, legal support or not.
